Windows 9 Plans Create Tension Between Microsoft and PC Makers

Windows 9 is projected to launch in April 2015, while RTM should be reached in February

If the information we have right now is accurate, Windows 9 should see daylight in April 2015, approximately one year after the introduction of Windows 8.1 Update.

While this does make sense when taking Microsoft’s new fast cadence into consideration, it’s really a weird decision for PC manufacturers, who are upset that it takes so long to bring a new operating system to the market.

Russian leaker WZor says that some OEMs have expressed their complaints towards the April 2015 release date, explaining that during that time of the year sales are going very slow. At the same time, they are asking Microsoft to bring the OS version to the market sooner, possibly before Christmas and the New Year, in order to benefit from the holiday sales boost and ship more devices.

The 530 slots in the range below the Lumia 630, and its 4G twin, the Lumia 635 – but in the United States, the 635 is available at prices that are making the 530 look rather irrelevant.
The Lumia 635 went on sale for as little as $99.99 off-contract (depending on the carrier that you buy it from), but the device is now available for even less, thanks to a promotion at Frys.com.

It Happens Only in India! Things Exclusively Done By Indians

India is a diverse country with different languages and cultures. Like any other culture or society, Indians exhibit their special traditions, customs, habits and lifestyle through the unique behavior traits they display and by doing things a little differently than the rest of the world.

It is these notable ways of doing things  have now become second-identity for an Indian across the world.

Take a sneak-peak at the list of things done exclusively by Indians, as compiled by Rediff.

Enjoys Eating Food with bare hands:

No doubt, Indians love trying cuisines from all parts of the world and like to go to fancy restaurants with different cuisines on menu. So, many of us are mastered the fine art of eating rice with chopsticks, a fork, knife and spoon.

But, when it comes to Indian foods, it is so diverse in form and structure that no group of metallic devices such as spoons and forks would really do the complete job , so, most Indians enjoy eating their food with bare hands.

It is hard to imagine the real taste of many famous Indian cuisines like Mysore masala dosa, mutton biryani or the pani puri with a fork and spoon.

RollBack XP: Secure and Protect Windows XP indefinitely

Windows XP users are looking for ways to secure their Windows XP installation as Microsoft has already ended support for this old, but popular operating system. There are several risks of staying with Windows XP now.  One way you can secure and protect your Windows XP installation in perpetuity would be to roll back or restore it back to a good point, every time you restart your computer. RollBack XP is a new freeware for Windows XP that lets you do just that.
Today, the size of the information that we store on our computers is too large. In fact, ‘large’ is an understatement. All this information is crucial and if anything goes wrong with the system, chances are that we might lose all this vital information in no time. The best way to protect ourselves against such disasters, it is advisable that we take frequent backups of all our important data. RollBack XP gives you a better option. Rollback, in literal terms, means an operation that returns the database to a defined previous state. With the help of Rollback XP, you can take backup of your data on Windows XP. For this, the app takes snapshots of your system and it restores your computer to any previous state as mentioned by you.

PM Narendra Modi plans digital cloud for every Indian

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's next big push to free up service delivery from the hold of the lower bureaucracy will be in the form of a 'digital cloud' for every Indian. Certificates issued by the government — education, residential, medical records, birth certificates etc — are to be stored in individual 'digital lockers' and a communication protocol established for government departments to access them without physically having to see the hard copy.

Information and technology secretary Ram Sewak Sharma, who is overseeing the ambitious MyGov.in programme of the government, told ET that this was one of the ideas Modi had frequently flagged as something that would resonate with all Indians.

Thousands of Mozilla email IDs and Passwords were leaked

This story may be a month old, but its is something Mozilla users need to know. Early this month, Mozilla announced that a database on Mozilla Developer Network or MDN that contained members’ email IDs and passwords got disclosed on a publicly accessible server. Mozilla warned its users about this mishap and asked them to make sure that they are not getting malicious emails or activities through their credentials. When members of Mozilla were about to recover from this shock, Mozilla again notified the same problem to its users that their email IDs and passwords are mistakenly open to public.

How to export your Skype contacts

Whether a swarm of spammers is attacking your Skype, or you just decide that you're tired of your current username, you may want to export your contact list and move it to another account. Ghacks.net recently shared a post about an application that can show you all contact information in an organized window, but this example will use Skype's default tools. Skipping on the third-party application means the data will be a bit messier to look at, but you can still get the job done with relatively little effort.
Here's how to export your Skype contact list:

Windows 8 Now Has More Users than Windows XP

Windows 8 and 8.1 have a bigger combined share than Windows XP

Microsoft has spent a fortune to make Windows 8 more appealing to those running previous Windows versions, and although at first uptake of the modern operating system was below expectations, it appears that more users are giving it a try these days.

Figures provided by market researcher StatCounter for the month of August 2014 show that Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have a combined market share that exceeds Windows XP’s, indicating that at least in the past 28 days, the modern operating system was powering more computers than its ancient predecessor.

Specifically, Windows XP is currently installed on 14.31 percent of the computers worldwide, while Windows 8 has a share of 7.35 percent. Windows 8.1 also comes close with 8.2 percent, thus leading to a combined market share of Microsoft’s modern operating system of 15.55 percent, so Windows XP is now being used by less people than those who installed Windows 8.

This is obviously exciting news for Microsoft, especially because the company is hoping to see more users giving up Windows XP and, at the same time, moving to the new Windows 8.

Soon, attendance of govt staff to be tracked online through attendance.gov.in

In what could be a revolutionary step towards monitoring and tracking the work of government officials, the NDA government has launched an “attendance website” to serve as a centralised database for all central government employees.

Though the website, attendance.gov.in, is still in the process of being developed, officials said it is expected to be modelled on the lines of similar websites of the Jharkhand government and the Department of Electronics and Information Technology.

To illustrate, the home page of the Jharkhand government’s attendance website gives the total number of employees present on the given day, along with graphical representations of “real-time attendance” and statistics on the percentage of people logging into office during different time slots, giving an idea of how many officials come to office during the designated timings. Further, a search for any registered employee yields complete details, along with the employee’s attendance/leave status.

Officials said the Centre’s website is likely to emulate most of these features and is expected to be as open to the public. “This level of open tracking takes transparency to another level, a key focus of this government,” said an official.

TechSpot: Soon no one will care about a phone's battery life

The fear of running out of battery wields such an extraordinary influence over how we use smartphones. We benchmark every task according to how much battery it takes. We are never too far from a charger, and many of us carry a heavy, cumbersome power bank.
I have good news: we are on the verge of true all day battery life.
We are a year or two away, but folks, by 2016 everyone should expect top notch battery life from their phones. There will be no power bank industry and no one will care whether batteries are removable.

Beware: FileHippo Now Pushing Adware

filehippo

It appears yet another once trusted source for downloads has succumbed to the dark side. FileHippo has decided to join the ranks of CNET Download.com and others, and is now offering software downloads via its own Download Manager, which includes adware offers.
This story first came to light a couple of months ago but until now I’ve not seen any firsthand indication that FileHippo had actually implemented the new system. I’ve been checking the site every few days or so with no sign of any changes. Then, yesterday, I came across numerous downloads on FileHippo involving the Download Manager… or, more accurately, adware wrapper.
Not all downloads on FileHippo are associated with the Download Manager as yet, but there are enough now to warrant a warning, and I suspect implementation might be ongoing. I hasten to add that FileHippo does provide an alternate ‘Direct Download’ link which bypasses their Download Manager and, of course, its 3rd party offerings:
filehippo - utorrent download
While the Direct Download link is a welcome option, I can’t help wondering how long it may last. If the existing implementation does not produce the desired effect – obviously an increase in revenue – how long before FileHippo decides to drop the Direct Download option altogether?

Google Drive Is Much More Than Docs, Sheets And Slides

It doesn’t come as a surprise if Google comes out with something new, improvised, revised or revealed extra uses to their software or products. They always have a hidden secret to all their products, be it hardware or software. Well in line with this magnum is the Google Drive app for Androids which allows (primary uses of the software) storage, management and analysis of docs, sheets and slides.

This is a cloud storage service which means it can store huge amounts of data. Google Drive is used by over 190 million users in schools, offices and firms around the world. This is also encrypted which means it is highly safe thus meeting the security concerns that people have about hacking. Well apart from the usual uses of Google Drive, here is three different use of the drive that most of us don’t know compiled by Times of India.

An Alternative for YouTube: Unbelievably the same software that runs the Tech Giant’s Video Stream also runs in Google Drive that means it acts as YouTube as well.

So any videos uploaded to the Drive are made available for the user to stream from any browser that is compatible.

The other advantage the Drive has over YouTube is that though YouTube has an option to keep your videos private but on the Drive you can share and manage your videos complete private. This also helps stream and sync your videos on your mobile devices.

How many apps do most smartphone users download per month? Answer: 0

While apps certainly existed before the iPhone – anyone else here remember downloading stuff onto iPAQs and such? – there's no doubt that it was Apple who popularized the concept. But despite smartphones spreading like wildfire, the majority of US smartphone users don't download new apps over the course of a typical month.
The claims are made by comScore’s new mobile app report, and they seem to suggest that the entire app ecosystem is driven by about one-third of smartphone owners, with "nearly half of all download activity in a given month."
So what's going on here? There are a number of possibilities:

The web browser is arguably the most important piece of software on your computer. You spend much of your time online inside a browser: when you search, chat, email, shop, bank, read the news, and watch videos online, you often do all this using a browser.
Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier. Use one box for everything--type in the address bar and get suggestions for both search and Web pages. Thumbnails of your top sites let you access your favorite pages instantly with lightning speed from any new tab. Desktop shortcuts allow you to launch your favorite Web apps straight from your desktop. Google Chrome also uses a brand new JavaScript engine (V8), which is much faster than existing javascript interpreters. This means you can create more complex and more intensive AJAX applications with fewer speed and processing constraints. Finally, Google Chrome is built on top of WebKit, so Google Chrome users will benefit from the CSS3 features being added to WebKit as those features are released.

Apple Replacing iPhone 5 Batteries For Free

Apple, apart from its stunning handsets and other products, is also known for its commitment to customers. It provides good services without giving any room for bad customer feedback.

Recently however, it has been noted that the Apple iPhone 5 handsets had battery problems, and had to be frequently charged, as it would run out too soon.

This fault has been spotted in the devices sold between September 2012 and January 2013. Apple acknowledged the fault and made all the handsets eligible for a free replacement, reports Forbes.

There are set criteria to be eligible for this replacement offer. Though the handset’s serial number falls under the replacement criteria, the device must be operational and should be damage free as it could make the battery replacement process complicated.
