Android TV – A Droid That Lives Inside Your TV Set

During the I/O developer conference in San Francisco, Google launched Android TV – a brand new platform designed to take over your TV set.
As you’d expect from a piece of software built for a modern TV set, Android Wear offers plenty of entertainment-centric features. You can watch TV, download movies and TV shows, and even play games. Like Amazon’s Fire TV, Google’s big screen platform functions as a bridge between you and the company’s multimedia library. In this case it is Google Play Store, which means that you can use your Google account to access your video collection and applications.

Android TV features a simple card-based UI that you can navigate using your remote, phone, gamepad, voice, or even an Android Wear smartwatch. The interface focuses on visual information, allowing you to quickly discover new content as well as get personalized recommendations based on your previous purchases. There’s also a Chromecast-like functionality that should make it extremely easy to stream videos to your big screen.
First Android TV-equipped TV sets are expected to arrive from major hardware makers like Sharp and Sony, while other partners are working on various set-top boxes. They should hit the market as soon as next year.
