73 Percent under Age Indians are on Facebook: Survey

No wonder, Facebook is popular nowadays. People of all ages show more interest on Facebook and it has become such a rage that 73 percent of Indian children below 13 years are active users; despite strict norms imposed by government for under age. Tweens are prohibited to access such form of social networking sites as it might bring negative outcomes like cyber bullying and online sexual abuse, revealed by the ASSOCHAM’s latest survey entitled “Indian tweens are on facebook despite being under age.”
According to the survey, in most of the cases, it has been observed that the parents who first assist their children to forge on their age to be a part of FB. The survey further disclosed that 75 percent of the parents of 8-13 year-olds, having an account on Facebook, are aware about their kids signing up for an account and nearly 82 percent of these parents help their kids create an account. Later on, majority of the parents regret helping their children as they become addicted to it.

Assocham Secretary General DS Rawat while releasing the survey, said, "Children are gaining access to social media sites at a younger age, which could expose them to content, people or situations that are out of their depth.”

"Easy availability of technology with lack of parental supervision is a significant reason for this ever-increasing menace of technology addiction," added Rawat.

Besides Facebook, other popular sites like Flickr.com, Google plus, Pinterest, and Snapchat, are also among the preferred websites for children between the age of 8 and 13.

The survey was carried out under Assocham Social Development Foundation by taking samples from major Indian cities like Ahmedabad, Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow and Dehradun.
