Fix: Your profile could not be opened correctly in Google Chrome

Google Chrome is used by many as their default browser because it is fast and loads quickly. Although it launches immediately at times you may find it displaying ‘Your profile could not be opened correctly’ error message as follows:

Your profile could not be opened correctly in Google Chrome

Some features may be unavailable. Please check that the profile exists and you have permission to read and write its contents.

This can be annoying especially when you require the browser to show up immediately. Corrupted history file can be regarded as the main source for getting this error message. But what is corrupted history file? Well, corrupted history file is a file that holds record of old visited web sites. This record is primarily stored in a file called WEB DATA file. So, you need to remove the web data files completely from the Google Chrome Web Browser directories first. However, before doing so it is essential to back-up all your valuable data - because, the web data files include all the valuable information such as your passwords, bookmarks, Chrome extensions, etc.

Push Pinning Documents

I can't believe I forgot this really important tip that will help you re-open frequently used documents.

Microsoft Office has always kept track of recently opened documents and you could see a list of the four most recent documents at the bottom of the File menu. In 2007 Microsoft expanded this list to display the last eighteen documents. At the same time they included the option to pin a document to the list so that it would never roll off, making it a cinch to open frequently used documents again.

When you visit the File tab in the 2010 and 2013 Office programs (or the Office Button in 2007), you'll notice that when you click on Recent on the left panel two columns appear to the right. The left column contains recently used documents, the right column displays recently visited folders. Both of the columns have push pins available to the right of each entry. Click the pin once to "pin" the document/folder to the menu.

This feature is particularly outstanding for those of you who are in a network environment where you have to do many clicks to navigate to network drives. Those drives are available now with one click.

Stopping A Runaway Printer

Step 1
Remove any paper in the paper intake area. Depending on the printer you may be able to accomplish this by taking out the paper cassette or you can just reach in and grab the paper. This will at least give you some time to consider your other options.

Step 2
Look in the lower right side of your monitor, in the tray area. You might see a little printer icon. You may have to click on "show hidden icons" to see the printer. When it appears in the tray area, double click it.

You will see the printer dialog box. This is good because you will be able to cancel the print job. From the Printer menu choose "Cancel all documents". You'll be asked to confirm this action.

You may have to restart your computer as well as the printer to remove the document from the print spooler.

Step 3
Turn everything back on, put the paper back in the printer and all should be good. If not, repeat steps 1 and 2.

Use Your Keyboard as a Mouse Using Ease of Access

Most computer users are comfortable and possibly more productive when they have skills to use both a mouse and keyboard to navigate through their computer.  But unfortunately the truth is that most users find it somewhat difficult to switch to another input device when their favourite one stops working.
For example, if your mouse stops working when you in the middle of something important, your only option is to find a replacement mouse fast or use the keyboard.
When you find yourself in this situation there is no need to panic. If you have ease of access settings ready to use, you only need to hit a keyboard shortcut in order to activate an option to move your cursor by using the keyboard instead of the mouse.

How to Use your Keyboard as a Mouse

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel to get to the screen as shown below. (There would be slight variations in the menu options in different operating systems. This tutorial is based on Windows 7 operating system.)

Developing a Backup Strategy

One of the most disturbing days of a computer user’s life is the day that their computer dies. It’s a little known fact that every computer has a surprise expiration date and everyone needs to be prepared for when that day comes. I’m not suggesting that this is a real built in expiration date but just know that one day your computer will die without warning.

There are countless options available from free document back up to services that will back up the entire hard drive. All of these are better and more reliable than the external drive sitting next to your computer. This external local backup is popular because people feel it is more secure than using a remote location. But you should understand that commercial remote locations use a series of encryptions that make them extremely safe and secure. The most troubling aspect of local backup is that the backup device is in the same environment as the primary computer. If you get a power surge from a lightning strike it will blow out your computer and the backup.

Copying Text from the Internet

The most common thing people do is to print out the entire web page, all eight pages, even though you only wanted the information on page three. A way around this is to select just the information you need, copy it and paste it into a word document. That’s what we’re going to do today.

In preparation you should open your word processing program, whatever program that might be. Also open a web browser, again whichever program is your favorite. Use the search engine to find a webpage that has interesting information for you to copy. This could be a recipe, directions, or travel recommendations. After you have identified the information you would like to copy you need to select it. Do not use the select all command, because you will select too much information and it will be unmanageable.

Extra Help for Microsoft Office

If you are a Microsoft Office user, you probably have needed some help to accomplish set tabs, create formulas, indent text, etc. Microsoft offers a new option in addition to the classic FAQ search.

On their website Microsoft has a page of Quick Start Guides for the 2013 version of its various programs in the office suite.  These are in PDF format for easy downloading and printing. Each guide runs about five to nine pages depending on the program and covers the changes made to the software from the previous edition. Tips for using the program are included, as is compatibility advice for working with people who do not have Office 2013.Even if you are not using the 2013 version of the software I would recommend looking them over. The programs changed very little from the 2007 or 2010 versions. You can find these Guides athttp://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/office-2013-quick-start-guides-HA103673669.aspx

Microsoft Office's Quick Access Toolbar

When the 2007 version of Microsoft Office came out there was a lot of user frustration. Everything was moved off the menu area that people had come to know and love, or at least know if not love. The menus were gone, replaced by tabs and ribbons. As users became more familiar with the new interface they realized that familiar actions took a few more clicks than they used to but accepted, grudgingly, the new reality. But there is hope!

Microsoft left one customizable area in the Office suite, the Quick Access Toolbar. The Quick Access Toolbar is located along the upper left side in all of the Microsoft Office programs. This handy toolbar is very easy to customize and it is a place I head to when setting up client's computers. The first item I add to the Quick Access Toolbar is "Quick Print". Adding Quick Print enables the user to send the current document to the default printer to print one copy...all without seeing the print dialog box! Yea. You want two copies, click the button twice. This is the same "Print" button we had on the toolbar for years before the big change.

Other options I like to add are "New" to create a new document with one click, "Open" to bring up the Open dialog box and, my all-time favorite, "E-mail" which will attach the open document to an email, even if the document has not been saved! I really love the E-mail button. It will work on most computers but not if you're using a public computer such as at a library.

Depending on how the client uses specific programs I will often add the "Sort" buttons in Excel and the "Format Painter" in Word. The picture below is of my Quick Access Toolbar, see how I've added my favorite icons.

Three Finger Salute

The three-finger salute refers to the original PC-compatible system command to reboot or restart a computer by pressing three keys simultaneously: Control, Alt and Delete. The
three-key combination is specifically designed to be impossible to execute with one hand in order to avoid the potential for accidental reboots.

When a program freezes or “hangs up” on your computer, you might not want to restart the whole computer but only the one program that isn’t responding. Using Ctrl+Alt+Delete will result in a selection of choices that varies by the version of the operating system you’re using. One of the choices will be “Start Task Manager”. This is a good starting point to identify what programs are running and which might have gotten “stuck”.  Click on the troublesome program in the list and then click the End Task button. Now you have to be patient. Clicking End Task multiple times does not make the computer respond quicker, in fact just the reverse is true. Multiple clicks slow down the process. You may get a another window saying the program is not responding. Just ignore it. If the program does not end in five minutes, you have my permission to choose Restart from the start button or hold down the power button and turn your computer off.

How to add Custom Search Engine to Chrome browser

Most browsers let you select the search engine of your choice. Some may prefer to use Google and yet others Bing as their default search engines. Google Chrome goes a step further. The browser lets you easily add any custom search engine to it and make it as your default.

Add Custom Search Engine to Chrome

But before that you have to do the following. Let us say you want to add The Indiapost Pariwar search engine to Chrome. Then visit the sites search page URL, in this case –  http://funnylogo.info/engines/Google/Red/India%20POST%20Pariwar.aspx and search for anything. Once the results are displayed, you may close the tab.
Now do the following. Click on the Chrome Menu button. Under Settings, look for the Search section and click on Manage search engines.

Bookmarking a Browser Page

I spoke with two clients after posting the index for my blog. They both commented that they would bookmark the page if they knew how to do it! Of course the directions depend on which browser you're using. Some refer to Bookmarking as adding to Favorites. What ever it's called, it is the process that allows you to save pages you've gone to in your browser. Generally these pages can be grouped together into folders or listed individually or added to a bookmark/favorites bar. The bookmark/favorites bar appears along the top of your browser window and should be used for webpages you use very frequently such as your email, calendar or facebook page. All of the browsers listed here use Ctrl + d (Command on the Apple) to add bookmark or favorite entries.

Internet Explorer

The Internet Explorer is one of the browsers that uses the term Favorites to help you quickly return to web sites you've visited. To add to the favorites, go to a page you want to add to your favorites list and click the yellow star in the upper right side of your screen. A drop down menu will appear. Click on Add to favorites to add the current page to your favorites list or to the Favorites bar. As you can see from the screen shot on the right, you can also add a page to your favorites list by using the keyboard command of Ctrl + d.

Tips for Gmail Changes

One of the things I love about the Google folks is that they are always trying to think up ways that they feel can improve your computer experience.  You may not agree that all of their "improvements/changes" are better but generally you have a choice of whether or not
you want to implement these changes. I was looking at my Gmail settings, something I recommend you do occasionally. When I clicked on the gear icon in the upper right of the Gmail screen I noticed "Configure Inbox" was a choice. I didn't remember seeing that before so I clicked on it.

Excel - 10 Time-savers

Here's a list of some really little things that you can use in Excel that can add up to big savings in time at the end of the day.  They are in no particular order. Enjoy.

  • Double-click in a cell to edit the contents - no need to go up to the Formula Bar to edit.
  • Double-click a sheet tab to rename it then press the Enter key.
  • Tap the F4 (function 4) key to create an absolute reference in a formula. Tapping it again will cycle through mixed references (where only one $ appears) and then back to relative reference (where no $ appear).
  • Rearrange sheets by dragging the sheet tab left or right. A small triangle moves with your mouse showing the new position of the moved sheet.

Understanding Your Computer: Operating Systems

What is an operating system?

An operating system (OS) is the main program on a computer. It performs a variety of functions, including
  • determining what types of software you can install
  • coordinating the applications running on the computer at any given time
  • making sure that individual pieces of hardware, such as printers, keyboards, and disk drives, all communicate properly
  • allowing applications such as word processors, email clients, and web browsers to perform tasks on the system (e.g., drawing windows on the screen, opening files, communicating on a network) and use other system resources (e.g., printers, disk drives)
  • reporting error messages
The OS also determines how you see information and perform tasks. Most operating systems use a graphical user interface (GUI), which presents information through pictures (icons, buttons, dialog boxes, etc.) as well as words. Some operating systems can rely more heavily on textual interfaces than others.

Negative List Updation Patch - Updated upto 31/07/2013

This patch file updates the negative list available in Sanchay Post software. To confirm updation, use the "Database Discrepancies >> NSC >> Details of Negative List Updation" option available in DBAnalyzer software.

The file 'NL_20130731.exe' should be copied to DBAnalyzer folder and executed after completion of day's transactions. This will update the negative list upto 31/07/2013 in Sanchay Post.

In addition to Negative List, updations relating to PINCODE details are also done in the database. Hence, execution of this patch will take longer than the usual updation time. System Administrators should ensure that the server is not switched off till successful execution of the patch.

2 Major Problems Facing Laptop Computers & the Solutions

The major problem of computers and laptops now are easily fixed but difficult to diagnose, this is because you can easily take the last resort fixing your laptop or computers by wiping the hard disc off and reinstalling the operating system for any software error. Though, it may be very easy for you to do but how sure are you that you might not get the same problem back when you can’t possibly tell where the problem of the system arises from?
In recent days the major problem faced by computers are majorly classified as the problem arising as a result of virus infection on the laptop computer as the case may be, but I’ll like to tell you that apart from virus infection, there are still some programs that also contribute to the malfunctioning of your laptops PC, these problem will be look into in this article.

Malware Problems

The malicious software popularly known as malware is an agent of destruction that destroys system gradually. Malware is a very dangerous program that could totally destroy the entire hard disk of a laptop computer if care is not taking. A good example of malware are “worms” and ‘’Trojan horse’’.
Malware can infect your system in two ways: a) through email attachment or, b) through p2p programs such as limewire.
It is often hard to get rid of malware from your system. It is either you prevent your system from being infected or when infected, you either restore you system or you wipe and reinstall your OS, I mean “Operating System”.
