PC troubleshooting tips

Computer tips and tricks as well as software, hardware, internet that help make you more productive and your overall computer experience a lot more enjoyable.
Nothing can put a damper on productivity quite like a computer that crashes on a regular basis. Sometimes, a crash is preceded by the dreaded “blue screen of death” or another warning; other times, a computer simply shuts off without any warning at all. In either case, the end result is a whole lot of frustration, aggravation and lost work. If your computer has been crashing frequently, you’d probably like to put an end to it. Unfortunately, getting to the bottom of things if often easier said than done. The following tips about improving your computer’s performance, though, are excellent places to begin.
Possibility(1): Corrupted System Registry Files

Every Windows-based PC has something called a Windows registry. The registry contains several files that are integral to the performance and operation of your computer. Over time, some of those files can become corrupted, be misplaced or get lost altogether. When that happens, the system registry becomes compromised – and frequent crashes are all-too-common symptoms. The best way to rule this possibility in or out is by running a Windows registry cleaning program. Such programs scan your Windows registry for problems then automatically make repairs. If you run a registry cleaner and the crashes persist, they are probably being caused by a different issue.

Gmail Unveils New Inbox With Tabs To Give You More Control Over Your Email

Gmail
Google introduced on Wednesday a fresh look for Gmail on its desktop, Android, and iOS apps. The changes are not cosmetic – the focus is on better email organization and management. This is the vaunted arena where every email application is pitting itself against the other, and while Gmail had remained comparatively unadventurous, the new updates promise much.
The new inbox introduces tabs, into which you can group your emails just like categories. From Google’s blog, it appears that there will be five tabs into which you can organize specific emails, and you can choose which tab among the five to display at any time, or display none of them. The tabs are: Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, and Forums. The tab names are pretty self-explanatory, Primary being the one where all your important emails comes in.  In Gmail for Android 4.0+ and Gmail for iPhone and iPad, the first screen will be Primary email and then you can easily navigate to the other tabs.

Disable CPU Core Parking For Dual And Quad Processors

Did you know that the cores in your processor may not be used and therefore you can disable cpu core parking? Sounds crazy but the CPU cores are parked and not being utilized.
I bought a new hp laptop that has seven cores and I wanted to know if the operating system was actually using all of these cores. To my surprise there was only 3 of the cores being used. See the screenshot below. Every second core is parked.

Configure Amount Of Disk Space To Use, For Offline Files in Windows

Normally, we don’t bother about the space used for offline files. Sometimes we don’t know where the extra space on our drives is getting used. But being a smart Windows user, you should be careful about the disk space. By default, Windows follows the policy of configuring and allotting 10% of disk space to cache offline files.
Automatic caching can be set on any network share. When a user opens a file on the share, the system automatically stores a copy of the file on the user’s computer. Sometimes this automatic caching consumes a considerable disk space. In other case, if the temporary cached files doesn’t matters for you then you may want to have no caching of disk space on your drive. To do that, you need to configure the offline files tab in order to disable amount of disk space to use for temporary offline files.

Disable Automatic Caching Of Temporary Files Using Registry Editor

1. Press Windows Key + R combination, type put Regedt32.exe in Run dialog box and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.
2. Navigate to this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

How to Open the On-Screen Keyboard

You are probably wondering why you would ever need an on-screen keyboard when you have a real keyboard right in front of you. Well things happen, and trust me, one day you may need it.
A friend of mine used it regularly because he was missing a few keys off his laptop keyboard.. They were not cheap to replace either.

It is also great for people with disabilities that find it easier to use a mouse rather than a keyboard. If you open the on-screen keyboard you can use your mouse to press the keys to type.

Video Game Safety Tips For Parents

Video Game Safety
Video game safety tips are an important part of of child’s education. School is out and that means children and teens will be spending most of their time in front of their computer screens and television, or playing their favorite video games. Children prefer to stay home because of these media; however, this presents new challenges to parents.
In fact, many people have pointed their fingers towards violent video games as the main culprit behind increased teen violence in the last couple of years. The violence exposed in the entertainment culture, particularly video games and movies, can influence vulnerable young adults to acting on their impulse. Although it is not proven, many researchers and scholars believe that if children are not properly guided with the kind of video games they play, it might contribute to youth violence, such as bullying, school shooting, and other assault charges. This is because some children and teens
  • are more susceptible to bad influence
  • are unable to differentiate reality and fantasy
  • have poor impulse control and may feel overwhelmed when acting out violent scenes
  • might be emotionally and mentally disturbed for various reasons, and may lean towards violent materials as a result.

How to Send an Email with Any From Address

There are a few ways to send an email with any FROM address but first, what does this mean? Sending an email from any FROM address means you can anonymously send an email, or choose any from address to send from. Maybe you are away from your email account but need to send an email to someone. If you send the email with no FROM address then how can the person ever reply to you?

Send an Email with Any From Address

Like I said, there are a few ways to send an email with any from address. You can even choose to send an email anonymously but that can be a bit sneaky.

Use a Free Online Email Sending Service

Here are two websites I found when I “Googled” to send an email with any from address.
  1. http://deadfake.com/Send.aspx
  2. http://www.sendanonymousemail.net/
All you have to do is fill in the form. See the screenshot below.

Restore Your Contacts in Gmail Email Account

Did you know that you can restore your contacts in your Gmail accounts even after deleting important contacts? I have done this before, deleted someone’s email address only to find that I did really need it. Luckily you can restore your contacts in your Gmail account, which turned out to be very handy in my case.
You can easily revert your contact list and undo any crazy mistakes you have made in an instant. You can restore contacts that you accidentally deleted or lost during syncing to another device. Maybe your Gmail account was hacked and the hacker deleted all of your contacts.

Restore Gmail Contacts

1. Login to your Gmail account. Click on the drop down menu and choose contactsfrom the list. See the screenshot below.

2. When you are in your Gmail contacts section go to the More menu and press on the drop down arrow.

Protect Your PC With IObit Malware Fighter 2

iobit malware fighter
The appropriately named IObit Malware Fighter 2 (I must admit, I’m disappointed it isn’t subtitled “The Reckoning”) is a major overhaul of the company’s anti-malware app. It adds a variety of features that update the software for modern times, including a Metro-style UI cloud security and full Windows 8 support. Though I was given access to the paid version, the basic anti-virus functionality can be accessed for free. Let’s see how IObit’s new app stacks up.
