Well, it looked for a moment like the next version of Android might be called 'Licorice',
but that little bit of misdirection kept us all guessing until the last
minute. Today, Google finally announced the next version of its OS:
Android 5.0 Lollipop.
The new OS is the first complete showcase for Google's new design language, Material Design, which was unveiled earlier this year.
Lollipop launches first on a trio of devices announced today: the Nexus 6 handset, built by Motorola; the Nexus 9 tablet from HTC; and a new device called the Nexus Player, an Android TV set-top box built in collaboration with ASUS.
Android 5.0 will debut on these devices, but will roll out to the
Nexus 5, 7 and 10, as well as Google Play Edition devices, "in the
coming weeks". As ever, a big question mark hangs over the issue of
exactly when other manufacturers will push the update to their
respective devices - and, inevitably, some handsets and tablets will never see the update at all.
