Clean your computer regularly to keep it in good working conditiion.
Not only will your computer be much more pleasant to work with if you clean it well, but it will also perform better and possibly save you money down the road. Dust can clog fans and vents in your computer, and your computer will develop problems if it is too hot over a long period of time. Some computer parts, such as the keyboard and mouse, can also harbor dirt and bacteria, so clean them regularly to avoid illness.

Items you will need

  • Can of compressed air
  • Screwdriver
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Cotton swabs
  • Paper towels
  • Window cleaner
  • Water

Step 1

Turn off the power to your computer, and unplug all cords.

Step 2

Remove the screws securing the side panel to the CPU case. Remove the panel from the CPU case. Use the can of compressed air to clean out the fan and power supply on the back of the case. Blow compressed air into the CD and DVD drives. Use Windex and a paper towel to wipe off the inside of the side panel before reinstalling it.

Step 3

Clean the outside case of the CPU case with rubbing alcohol to disinfect the surface.

Step 4

Turn the keyboard upside down, and gently shake it to loosen any crumbs or debris. Use the can of compressed air to blow out smaller particles and dust stuck between the keys.

Step 5

Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol. Squeeze the tip gently to remove the excess alcohol. Gently wipe the tops and sides of all the keys on the keyboard with the rubbing alcohol. The rubbing alcohol will remove any bacteria living on the keys.

Step 6

Open the back of the mouse, and remove the ball inside. Use compressed air to blow dirt and dust out of the mouse. Once large particles are removed, use tapwater to wash the ball. Allow the ball to air dry completely. Use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the inside and outside of the mouse.

Step 7

Spray a paper towel with window cleaner. Wipe the screen to remove any fingerprints and grime. Use rubbing alcohol and a paper towel to clean the plastic components on the monitor.

Step 8

Verify that all parts are completely dry before plugging in the cords and turning on the computer.
