India's Micromax Now among the Top Ten Smartphone Brands Globally

Homegrown Micromax has made it to the top ten mobile brands globally in terms of sales. A technology research firm, Gartner, released its data where Micromax acquired 1.8 percent of the global market share in Q1 sales of 2015 and ranked 10th on the list, reports Indian Express.

Reportedly, Micromax sold out 8,158,000 units in the first quarter of 2015.

Anshul Gupta, Research Director, Gartner, said, “During this quarter, local brands and Chinese vendors came out as the key winners in emerging markets,”

“These vendors recorded an average growth of 73 per cent in smartphone sales and saw their combined share go up from 38 per cent to 47 percent during the first quarter of 2015.” he added.

However, Korean firm Samsung still retained the top position with 24.2 percent of the smartphone market while acquiring 21.4 percent of the overall mobile market. Apple races close with 13.1 percent share.

“Despite a weak first quarter globally, Samsung’s performance returned to growth quarter-on-quarter, with an 11 percent increase from the fourth quarter of 2014. We expect Samsung’s drop rate to be slower than that seen in recent quarters with sales of its new S6 smartphones starting in the second quarter of 2015, and its Galaxy Alpha receiving good response,” said Gupta.

Micromax, in a product release, shared about getting ahead in the smartphone race as a result of “continued investment in the best technological innovations, right understanding the consumer needs & expectations, innovating continuously for devices & services, and a robust offline & online distribution network to provide a world class experience for its consumers.” Micromax is expanding its network and market in SAARC and is also venturing in Russia since last year.

Apple’s iOS also witnessed positive growth from 15.3 percent and now owns 17.1 percent of the OS market. On the other hand Android saw a drop from 80.8 percent to 78.9 percent. Even Microsoft’s Windows faced a fall in market share and now stands at 2.5 percent.
