8 Major Hits and Misses of Microsoft

Microsoft Windows has dominated the PC operating systems for quite a while now. The company has faced its failures and managed to cope with them. Read on to find out about them as compiled by Forbes.

#1.Windows XP: Windows XP has been a hit ever since its launch in 2001.After lasting for almost 13 years, Microsoft decided to end support for the OS
in 2014. Windows XP is the most popular and widely used operating system selling almost 400 million copies globally within the five months of its release, and has sold close to one billion copies overall. It has remained as the popular OS even after the newer versions were released.

#2.Windows ME: The Windows ME released in 2000 was the last operating system on the Windows 9x series. The OS was buggy, slow and had stability issues. This OS was replaced by the Windows XP in 2001 and the former OS’ support was ended by 2006.

#3.MS-DOS: Released in 1981, MS-DOS was the main product which provided Microsoft the revenue and marketing resources to grow from a programming language company to a software development one. This was the main OS used by the IBM computers from mid-80’s to 90’s, it is a flexible OS which consumes very less installation space on the hard drive.

#4.Windows 3.1: Windows 3.1 is an operating system released by Microsoft in 1992 for the personal computers. The OS was sold over 3 million copies in two months of its release. Microsoft won an award for the company as the ‘Most innovative company working in the U.S. in the same year taping its hold in the PC market as the most widely used OS for a long time.

#5.Zune: Zune is a digital media product brand and services offered by Microsoft. Five years after Apple came out with the iPod software, Microsoft
released the Zune for the portable media players. Microsoft's late entry in the market led to its fall as a digital media product competing with Apple. The Brand was not a complete failure as the software is still being used as the desktop sync on the present Windows 7 and the 8.

#6.Internet Explorer 6: Internet Explorer 6 is the sixth major update from Microsoft for the Internet explorer. Released in 2001, it was out right after the launch of Windows XP. This web browser has been labeled as the ‘least security software on the planet’ by some publications for lack of its support for modern web standards and its security issues.

#7.Office 365: Microsoft office 365 was released in 2011. This software enables people to use the services of the Microsoft Office through a cloud. It helps you sync all the documents on your computer to mobile phones.

#8.Windows Vista: Windows Vista was released in 2006, five years after the release of Windows XP in 2001. The OS was criticized for its high system
requirements, lack of compatibility of some pre-vista software and many more led to users opting for Windows XP over Vista. The Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer at the end of his tenure said that in his 14 years of service at Microsoft the biggest regret was the Windows Vista. After spending close to a decade on its development, it was an expensive and a clunky mess.
